Portico Quartet

29 Sep

London’s Portico Quartet are a modern jazz quartet whose new album Isla was recently released on Real World Records. The album was recorded at Abbey Road by legendary producer John Leckie and while influenced by Miles Davis and Phillip Glass (to name just a few) the band’s music can’t be strictly categorized as “jazz” because much of their sound defies any kind of categorization. It’s instrumental music; sometimes it recalls the work of composer Steve Reich, sometimes they sound like Radiohead, sometimes they sound like Weather Report. The band members, each in their early 20’s, are all accomplished players and include drummer Duncan Bellamy), Milo Fitzpatrick on double bass, percussionist Nick Mulvey and Jack Wyllie on soprano, tenor saxophones and electronics, and got their start in 2005 busking on the South Bank of London’s Thames. The band perform tomorrow night at World Cafe Live Take a break from the rawk, and vibe out to this gorgeous minimalist, noirish piece of music.
