SVB insiders know of my great like of Peter Gene Hernandez, mostly known as Bruno Mars. Hands down, he made one of the best records of 2010. Right up there with LCD and Tame Impala and Arcade Fire. Check out this version of “Grenade” for today’s pure pop pleasure via the folks at Hypetrak.
New Nas via Hypetrak. According to Hypetrak:
Here goes Nas’s submission to Carmelo Anthony’s latest Become Legendary mixtape. The song has been previously leaked in the past, but now finds its way on a proper platform. You’ll also find a wide array of other notable hip-hop acts on the project such as Bun B, Jadakiss, Big Sean, Ghostface Killah and N.O.R.E. to name a few. The project serves in conjunction with Carmelo’s latest signature shoe with Jordan Brand.

Happy Record Release Day to Reading Rainbow. Their new album Prism Eyes is out today on Hozac Records and we couldn’t be happier. It’s filled with indiegaragebasementrock nuggets. Power pop for the indierock nation! One of our favorite songs from the album, “Always On My Mind” was one they cut for a session they did for Shaking Through, the online collaboration between WXPN and Weathervane Music in Philly.

Sarah and Rob also made a really cool mix tape for Artist Advocacy that you can listen to below. It’s got songs from The Wipers, Sonic Youth, Velvet Underground, The Beatles, Iggy Pop, Dylan and a cover of Suicide’s “Dream Baby Dream” by Black Tambourine.
Some nice buzz coming out of CMJ about BK’s Black Taxi Dig the rock. Dig the horns. Sort of Killers-esque but don’t hold that against them. Keys/guitars in a rad new wave new rock spin. Songs are tight. Familiar, yet new. And they don’t sound like every band that wants to sound like Girls or Wavves or White Denim or Chillwave/Electronica grandfather Giorgio Moroder.
“Up Here For Thinking, Down There For Dancing”
“Do What You Gotta Do”
Now at CMJ.
Playing Philly at The Fire on November 11th.
SVB readers know I’m a fan of the groove so after reading in the latest Mojo about a remix of Peggy Lee covering “Sittin’ On The Dock Of The Bay,” I decided I had to track it down. Upon arrival to DJ Friction’s Soundcloud page I uncovered a treasure chest and funky re-mixes by this German DJ, sampled right below.
Test drive some of these songs below and if you want more, head on over here for some unlimited jams.
