jaw dropper of the day: hiss golden messenger

21 Oct

Hiss Golden Messenger is M.C. Taylor and longtime collaborator Scott Hirsch who used to be in a San Fran band called Court & Spark. Taylor lives in North Carolina and Hirsch in NYC however they found time to record one of the best rootsy releases of the year so far. The album was named for a Canned Heat song (see video/audio below) and has a soulful/country vibe to it that brings to mind the work of Jeb Loy Nichols’ Fellow Travelers from back in the day and some of Joe Henry’s earlier releases. JJ Cale and Tony Joe White would be proud of what these cats have accomplished.

HGM’s new album Poor Moon is being released on November 1st on Paradise Of Bachelors records. You can pre-order and stream the album here. Don’t sleep on this one, folks.
