MeMyself&I

Hi, my name is Bruce Warren and this is my “About” page.

Some Velvet Blog was born on December 31, 2004. Wanting to experience and engage with this new community of music fans, I leaped right into blogging and discovered a new fan-driven cultural movement that excited me. It still does, hundreds of posts and interactions with music fans later. The name SVB was inspired by “Some Velvet Morning” by Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra. It was the song I was listening to when Blogger asked me for a name. It just sort of worked at the time. I could go on about how Blogger shut down my blog because of DMCA violations, but I won’t. For now, wordpress is my home.

Some vital statistics:

– I am the Assistant Station Manager for Programming at WXPN in Philadelphia where I am in charge of all the local and national programming and digital media. I am also the Executive Producer of World Cafe a show that I proudly helped start & launch in October 1991.
– I have been in public radio/public media for 20 years. I was once quoted in a trade magazine saying “I will never work for commercial radio.” I meant it.
– You can follow me (or not) on twitter here
– You can become my friend (or not) on Facebook here
– You can read my Some Velvet tumblr here
– I wrote a book called Wisdom For A Young Musician.
– I teach Radio Management at Drexel University and Social Media And The Organization at the University of Penn in the Organizational Dynamics Masters degree program.
– I have a wonderful, amazing wife and two boys who have re-taught me the joys of Top 40 music.

There’s a legendary DJ in Philly who I grew up listening to named Jerry Blavat AKA The Boss With The Hot Sauce & The Geator With the Heator. He was and continues to be a huge inspiration to me. He’s got this great saying, which is: “Keep on rockin’ cause you only rock once.” Every day that goes by I try to live that commandment to the fullest.

    Hey Some Velvet,

Im sure you guys get these requests all the time, but how would one submit an album/mixtape to your site for people to check out?  I am a hip hop artist out of Los Angeles, and have been continually told to promote my music through indie avenues.  If possible, I would love to post my mixtape,The Naked Eye, on your site for a free download.  My myspace page is myspace.com/trickPAmusic , and if you guys ever get the time I would sincerely appreciate you checking me out.

    Thanks very much!

  8. NIjae Draine March 18, 2011 at 4:49 am #

    hiya,

I’m Nijae Draine, singer/songwriter for the indie pop band Crash Collect. Recently, I wrote, composed, and produced a solo acoustic/folk EP over spring break titled Spring Cleaning [appropriate, eh?]. Its a short but sweet 6 track extravaganza about the ever persistent paradox of love, disappointment, etc… — described by one friend (who may or may not be biased) as a “female Bon Iver with the soul of Tracy Chapman.” I can live with that.

The EP is available for streaming/downloading [for freesies!] on my bandcamp site nijaedraine.bandcamp.com. I encourage you to have a listen. It would make me a very happy camper.

    peace,
    nij

    Bruce!

I wanted to take a minute to pass along to the music of a new project I’ve been working on over the past year. Borne out of sickness and stagnation, what we thought was going to start as a noise duo quickly morphed into a project based more on crafted songwriting than layers of sound (though I still stand by my fuzz pedal(s)).

I know you guys are innudated with new music everyday, but I thought you might like our stuff. Hope you have time for a listen – email me if you have any questions.

    Thanks!

    -Nick Lembo

    Hey Bruce,

Have you heard of new singer/songwriter Kirby Kaiser?

Hailing from Chicago, Illinois, singer-songwriter Kirby Kaiser delivers the blue-eyed, airy melodies of a 60’s girl group combined with harmony-rich vocals, then dusted with dreamy reverb. Her songs are a melting pot of soul, jazz, du-wop, vintage pop, and bubblegum-sweet lyrics tinged with the melancholy of teenage romance. Only 19 years old, this is Kirby’s first-ever EP, both self-released and self-titled. Her lyrics are inspired by the likes of the Ronettes, Fiona Apple and Lesley Gore and she prides herself on blending various genres to produce a sound that is all her own.

Her first single “There’s a Boy” was released on August 9 to the delight of the blogosphere.
We want to give you a chance to listen to a sneak peek of her 5-song EP which will be released in the coming week:

    Here’s what people are saying:
    URB Magazine
    Blah Blah Blah Science

Any chance you’d like to schedule an interview or review her self-titled EP or single?

Please let me know if you need a hard copy or anything else moving forward.

    Thanks,
    Amanda

    Hi Bruce,

Sorry for the uninvited interruption but we thought that you might like to hear our music. We are a London based band called Remodel and have released three singles and recently an album called Statues. We’ve had a bit of radio play in Britain and abroad and played a lot of gigs, mostly in London but we try to get out as often as we can. It’d be great if you’d have a listen to our stuff.

You can download our album from here for free (just set the amount to £0)

    Hi Bruce,

I love the ME MYSELF & I section… after reading all that you do, how do you have time for ANYTHING? You’re amazing!

I would live for you to take a moment to listen to Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Bryan Akcasu at http://www.soundcloud.com/bryanakcasu. He has recently self-released the album “Put Your Hand Out,” which has many local favorites. Bryan’s unique style transcends through his chords and vocals. Saying “I know you’re busy” seems to be a bit of an understatement, but I appreciate your time.

    Thank you!
    Valerie

  25. Frank Cifarelli November 16, 2011 at 11:21 am #

    Hi Bruce,

My name is Frank Cifarelli. I’ve just self-released an EP under the name Good Frames for which I wrote, programmed or performed, produced, recorded and mixed everything on.

Like most creative people who work hard, I believe in this stuff, but I’d love to know if you or your readership does. I see this is the way all us opportunists are trying to get a hold of you, so I’m adding myself to the list. I hope mine won’t be the post that puts you over the edge.

Are you currently accepting submissions for reviews/posts/mentions on your blog?

If so, here is a link to the EP’s Soundcloud page:
    http://soundcloud.com/goodframes/sets/still-ep/

And a really great animated music video a friend made over the course of the last year:

Please feel free to post this and subject it to your harshest criticism.

If there’s anything I can do to make your life easier to get my music posted or if you’d like a free download of the EP and lyric booklet (I don’t currently have a budget for CD production), please let me know.

Thanks so much for your time and energy!

    Best,
    Frank

Last year the band opened for acts such as My Morning Jacket, Dan Mangan and Basia Bulat.
Until the release you can listen to the first single “Everything Changes” and watch a live clip of the song “Don’t give up on me” on their website:

  27. Mark Northfield February 5, 2012 at 3:56 pm #

Hi. I’m Mark Northfield, a UK based indie-pop-classical musician. I make quirky, intelligent and occasionally theatrical arty pop stuff, often collaborating with vocalists drawn from a variety of genres.

I’m releasing a digital EP this week entitled NOTHING IMPOSSIBLE and have crafted a cute n colourful fishy animation video for the title track with a subtext reflecting the song’s somewhat darker theme.

The EP and the forthcoming album it comes from (ALTERATIONS – out in April) can both be heard on my Soundcloud page, with four of the album tracks presently downloadable: http://www.soundcloud.com/mark-northfield

The EP will be available to buy from regular online music stores as of this week (iTunes etc) and also Bandcamp: http://marknorthfield.bandcamp.com/

    Hope you like.

    Cheers,

    Mark
