earlier today i posted this video of an interview/performance of philly’s black landlord for wxpn’s local music web site the key. during the interview the frontman of the landlord, maxx, reminisces about the first time he performed on stage and he talks about his days when he was one of the three ringleaders of the goats, who got signed to ruff house/columbia out of this town in ’91 or so. the band made two records; the first of which – tricks of the shade– came out in ’92 and remains to this day a hip-hop classic. i didn’t mention about maxx’s being in the goats in my first post about them but felt i needed to come back and mention it. the goats rocked this town when they were coming out and when they got signed the city was ready for some new hip-hop heroes, as cats like jeff and the fresh prince and three times dope and schoolly had come out a few years before and each had some great successes. the goats grabbed this town hard for a few years with their three rapper frontal assault and a live band. their legacy lives on in the work maxx is doing with black landlord. videos of the goats below, and some lives tracks from black landlord recorded live in concert from wxpn’s key studio sessions.
