True Soul, Vol. 1 – Deep Sounds From The Left of Stax

23 May

True Soul, Volume 1: Deep Sounds From The Left of Stax is being released by Now-Again on June 21st. You can pre-order this tight collection here. According to their web site:

Now-Again Records, in association with label-owner Lee Anthony, is proud to present the release of True Soul: Deep Sounds from the Left of Stax Vol. 1, the first installment of rare and unreleased funk and soul music from the fabled Arkansas indie. Over twelve years in the making, this anthology – presented over the course of two CD/DVDs and a four LP box set – seeks to establish True Soul’s rightful place within America’s funk and soul pantheon. Be the first to get your hands on Vol. 1 through an exclusive presale in the Stones Throw webstore starting 05.23.2011, a month before its worldwide release, 06.21.2011.

True Soul’s story intertwines with the renowned Sam Philips – an early mentor and patron – and Memphis’s Al Bell and Willie Mitchell – with whom Anthony collaborated as he cultivated Little Rock’s funk and soul scene under the shadows of Stax and Hi Records. The Gap Band’e genesis is but one sub-plot, as Anthony’s recordings of a stranded funk ensemble make their way to Leon Russell and lead to the formation of one of the decade’s best-known showbands. Vol. 1 carries the rare, locally-distributed funk and soul 45s that led the likes of renowned collectors DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist to Anthony’s Soul Brothers’ Records in search of his fabled “treasure chest.”*

Both volumes – accompanied by a DVD containing live performances by the True Soul All stars captured from 1973’s True Soul Revue television program – are essential to experience True Soul is its entirety. Vol. 2 and the four LP box set will be released on Stones Throw’s webstore on 06.27.2011, a month before their worldwide release on 07.26.2011.
