New Erland and The Carnival

5 Mar

The title song to the new Erland and The Carnival album (out March 29th) is filled with swirling pensive psychedelia and twists of the medieval kind. The trio – Erland who sings, Simon Tong (yeah you know him from The Verve, The Good, The Bad & The Queen and Gorillaz) and drummer David Nock – draw on British rock & folk and ambient music for some dark tales of modern love.

Lyrics:
somebody told me the answers were in my mind
next to the reasons and under the love we hide
but I know where they go (everytime I lie)
(they ain’t comin’ for us) I know

somebody told me the future was mine was to lose
riding a wave and turning this white to blue
but I hope they’re wrong (it’s keeping me alive)
(they ain’t coming for us) I know

New Acrylics

21 Feb

Molly Shea and Jason Klauber are Brooklyn’s Acrylics. The duo have roots in Philly and met at Oberlin College where they began making music together. After they graduated they moved to Brooklyn, formed a band with a drummer who would go on to play with MGMT and Shea and Klauber decided to go on as a duo. Their first EP, entitled “All of the Fire”, was released on Terrible Records (Chris Taylor from Grizzly Bear’s label) in late 2009 and they’re releasing their debut full length on March 1st. Lives And Treasure is coming out on Hot Sand Records and Friendly Fire Recordings. Acylics’ chamber-dream-pop shimmers with high melody that recalls bands like The Dream Academy and the New Zealand indie-pop of The Chills.

Vancouver’s Chains Of Love

6 Feb

Vancouver’s Chains Of Love have been getting blogs of love lately for their 60’s influenced garagey-retro-Tina Turner-infused rock and soul songs. The band’s tunes are timeless gems – sure you may hear elements of The Shangri-La’s, Jesus and Mary Chain, The Crystals or The Cramps or any number of pick-your-favorite-Nuggets or current indierockretro band favorites, but this crew is channeling some serious energy with a handful of excellent songs. The performances are emotionally charged (five volts of cool!) with Wall of Sound bravado and lead vocalists Nathalia Pizzaro and Rebecca Marie Law Gray (who also plays guitar) rock the garage rock highway like racing car pros. This is some good shit, my friends.

the new mogwai album has blown the speakers out of my brain

11 Jan

It’s official; I’m completely over the moon for this new album from Scottish rockers Mogwai, coming out on Sub Pop on February 15th. Admittedly, I’ve sort of never had them much on my radar, but with this new album – Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will they’ve seriously entered the SVB-iverse. Noisy, majestic, spiraling, snowblind, and tuneful.

Get Your Guards On

3 Jan

Like you, I’m always sitting on tons of music to check out and for some reason it took me a while to get to this one – I really like the new EP from the NYC band Guards. Guards are the work of singer and guitar player Richie James Follin; some of you may know of his work with The Willowz or this overlooked solo albvum. The “story” threads go something like this: Richie’s sister is Madeline Follin, one half of the band Cults. Guards don’t have a myspace page (really, who the heck cares anyway) or a Facebook page. Just this or this. After returning from a European tour he wound up in a studio and made this record, a seven song EP which is alarmingly great. Follin does the 60’s garage/psychedelia/doo-wop thing sifted through the indierock filter really well. Caroline Polachek of Chairlift is on the album, as are Cults. There are times when the songs remind me a bit like Tame Impala and the psychedelic indierock soul of Hacienda. Or maybe very early Primal Scream meets the Byrds at their most jangly-C86 mode. If you like the pop playground where bands like Summer Camp, Girls, Kurt Vile, and Bethany romp around, then you’ll dig Guards. The album has a pretty rad “Let Me Roll It” McCartney styled fuzz doo-wop indie jam called “Crystal Truth” that’s just incredible. And at the price of free, what more can you ask for? (Not that free should matter or anything….and hey, bands do need to eat and pay their rent). Download the EP here. Enjoy the tune below from the EP.
